The Underworld is one of the numerous astral realms that exist to which souls go after they die.

Description[]

In almost all mythologies, there are versions of the underworld. Most of them represent it as a separate dimension underground, but unlike Hell, it is not a place of eternal torture, being a more neutral ground for the souls of the afterlife, with aspects of both Heaven and Hell.

The Underworld is usually ruled by one God or several depending on the pantheon to which it is associated, although each underworld is different depending on the person's belief.[citation needed] Although Death is connected to these realms, jurisdiction is left to each underworld's respective representative.

History[]

In the Song of Orpheus, following the instructions of his aunt Teleute, Orpheus goes to Taenarum in the Helade’s south where he finds a cave that is a portal to the Greek underworld, there he is taken by Charon over the river Styx and continues his journey through the kingdom, once there he meets thousands of frozen ghosts and above them are Hades and Persephone, the kings of that underworld.

Through a beautiful and sad song Orpheus begs the kings of the underworld to return his beloved Eurydice, the song is so sad that the entire underworld stops for a moment to hear such a mournful melody, The wheel of Ixion stops turning, the crows stop eating the organs of Tityus and Tantalus stops trying to satisfy his eternal hunger and thirst. All the spirits of the dead begin to cry non-stop due to such music, the furies even began to cry non-stop, finally at the end of the song, Hades agrees to bring Eurydice back to life but warns Orpheus that he should not look at her until he has left the underworld, if he does so, Eurydice will remain dead and he will not have the right to return to complain. He indicates the second exit from the underworld and orders him to leave.

In the House of Windowless Rooms Lucifer went to Yomi, the Japanese underworld, looking for some trace of his wings. Izanami, the Queen of Yomi, invited him to dinner to discuss the subject.

Leaders[]

Each underworld has different rulers, depending on the underworld the name given to it is also different:

The Hades[]

Yomi[]

Helheim[]

  • Hel: Goddess of the Nordic Underworld.
