The Sandman is a dark fantasy series produced on Netflix loosely based on Neil Gaiman's DC Comics series of the same name. Allan Heinberg served as showrunner. Gaiman served as executive producer along with David Goyer.[2] The series premiered on August 5, 2022.[1]

The first season adapts Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll's House (excluding issue #9 "Tales in the Sand") and the first half of Dream Country.

The second and final season adapts Season of Mists and Brief Lives in its first half while adapting The Kindly Ones and Death: The High Cost of Living for its second half.[5][6]

Synopsis[]

There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he's made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way.

Development[]

  • On July 1, 2019, The Sandman received an 10-episode series order from Netflix.[2]
  • The series was slated to start filming at the end of May 2020 but production was delayed amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
    • During this time, Audible released an audiobook version of The Sandman (starring James McAvoy) with Neil Gaiman narrating almost every single chapter (with "Tales in the Sand" as the exception since it's a standalone story where no one from the regular cast performs, save for the announcer).
  • The series was set resumed production around October 2020.[16] Following this, it was announced that filming for the series began on October 15, 2020.[13]
  • On August 19, 2022, it was announced that an additional episode would be released, and serve as an adaptation of the seventeenth and eighteenth issues of the comic.[4]
  • On November 29, 2023, in celebration of the anniversary of the comic's release, it was announced that production for the second season had resumed.[17]
  • On June 3, 2025, the season 2 episode titles were announced along with an additional episode that serves as a bonus standalone episode after its final episode.[18]

Trivia[]

  • Unlike the graphic novels, the series is set in modern day, in the year 2021.[19]
  • When it was first announced, Gaiman stated the gender of The Sandman could also be up for debate.[19]
  • Several actors in the series also portrayed characters in the Sandman Audible version:
