The Presence is a character in the DC Universe who is essentially the incarnation of the Abrahamic God. It is considered the creator of the entire DC Multiverse and everything within it, making it the most powerful being in the DC cosmology.
History[]
The Presence is the supreme and primordial entity of all creation, existing before creation itself and outside of any form of order or time. It even predates the realms of the Infinites and the known cosmic planes. Its home, the Silver City, is a perfect celestial city, predating time and the very concept of matter.
The Presence intervenes only rarely, usually allowing its will to be expressed through manifestations called the Voice—the Logos. This emanation can take the form of a divine call, a cosmic whisper, or a powerful wave of creation, depending on the need or the gravity of the situation.
Though rarely seen or named, its influence is omnipresent: it is the origin of the celestial order, the existence of angels like Lucifer and Remiel, and the very balance between Heaven, Hell, and the other metaphysical spheres. Even the Infinites recognize its implicit authority, though it is almost never expressed directly.
Appearance[]
In the DC Universe, The Presence takes on multiple forms depending on the era, the story, or the characters' perspectives.
The Elegant Old Man: In the Lucifer saga (particularly Lucifer #68), he appears as an elderly man, wearing a dark suit and a bowler hat. He has a gray mustache, holds an umbrella, and is sometimes accompanied by symbolic objects such as a cosmic dagger or a sphere containing the universe.
The Voice: His first appearance dates back to More Fun Comics #52 (1940), where he acts as a disembodied voice (The Voice). It is in this form that he bestows his powers on the Spectre and resurrects the Justice Society of America, embodying a faceless divine authority.
The Hand: During the creation of the universe (the cosmic Big Bang), The Presence manifests as a gigantic luminous hand emerging from a nebula. This iconic image is seen notably in Green Lantern #40 and other prophetic tales, symbolizing the act of creation itself.
The Source: In stories related to the New Gods (Fourth World), The Presence is associated with the Source, an invisible, omniscient, and omnipresent energy, considered the abstract embodiment of his divine power, acting outside of ordinary perception.
Unusual Forms: Sometimes, The Presence takes on surprising, almost playful forms. In the New 52 series, he briefly appears as a Scottish Terrier puppy with glowing eyes facing the Phantom Stranger. In other, rarer stories, such as Supergirl or Sandman, he takes the form of a young boy wearing a baseball cap, emphasizing his infinitely polymorphic and elusive nature.
