The Case of the Two Dead Dragons is the fifth episode of the first season of the Netflix original supernatural series, Dead Boy Detectives.
Synopsis[]
While Crystal, Edwin, and Charles investigate the tragic murders of two popular jocks, Niko sets up Jenny and her secret admirers on a butcher shop date.
Plot[]
Crystal has a nightmare involving Charles and David. She screams herself awake, also alerting Edwin and Charles, who come running into her room. She insists that she's fine and asks for a moment alone with Charles. Crystal explains that David is messing with her head, making her relationship with Charles confusing. Additionally, watching him fight off the Night Nurse was a lot to watch, though Charles insist that he did what he had to do. As for Crystal, she just wants to focus on keeping David out and figuring out who she is. Charles is simply a distraction from that, so for the time being they should just remain his friends.
Whilst reading Monty's astrology book, Edwin is approached by two boys named Brad and Hunter, who were murdered not too long ago. They aren't quite sure what happened. The last thing they know is they had just won the state championship and both had gotten into U-Dub. The next thing they know it's all black, and they're dead, leading them to believe that they were murdered. The cops say it was alcohol poisoning at a party, though they only had a couple drinks. Additionally, their eyes seem to periodically bleed, suggesting something more potent than alcohol. Edwin, Charles, and Crystal have a huddle to discuss if they will take on the case, which they ultimately agree to.
Niko writes a letter and sends it to her mom, but just behind her, she notices a woman with a letter, who she believes to be Jenny's secret admirer. Niko follows her to the library and discovers that the secret admirer is Maxine the librarian, who she confronts directly.
While waiting for Crystal, Charles confides in Edwin that they kissed, but with David messing around in her head, she isn't keen on starting anything. And Charles agreed to keep things professional. Edwin asks what the kiss was like. He didn't feel it physically, but he felt it mentally. When he was on that cliff, he was angry. He sometimes wishes he got to grow up, but if it had to be this way, he wouldn't want to be dead with anyone else besides Edwin. Crystal joins them, and moments later Niko arrives, revealing that she attended the same school as Brad and Hunter and that the whole school was talking about their deaths. Everyone mourned Brad and Hunter for months. There was even a really sad parade.
Litty and Kingham condescendingly ask Niko about her case, asking if it's the "Mystery of smelling like a grotty ass fish." Niko won't be deterred and looks to the cursed magic 8-ball for answers, but it simply says, "Outlook not so good."
Esther has tasked Monty with gaining the Dead Boys' trust completely. Monty is upset as he was supposed to see Edwin today, but they got distracted by another case, leading Esther to suspect that he may not be trying hard enough. A large banging sound shakes the house, it is Esther snake, who IS hungry due to the Dead Boys having taken Becky Aspen. As Monty recalls, Esther stood bleeding on the shores so that Lilith would come out of the ocean and grant her immortal life. She never said Esther had to stay young and beautiful. Those are her own aspirations. Esther becomes enraged, gripping Monty and telling him to never mention Lilith's name again, as she tricked Esther. What good is living forever if you're simply going to wither away, Esther remarks. If having to feed her snake a generation of little girls to maintain her beauty is the price to pay, then so be it. Unfortunately, the Dead Boys continue to get in her way, which is why she needs Monty to do his job.
Brad and Hunter take Edwin, Charles, and Crystal to the location of their death. They played the big game and came into the woods to celebrate, and that's the last thing they remember before everything went black. The last thing they recall before the black-out is seeing a dead tree covered with evil eyes. Edwin suspects the tree they're describing could be a white bark pine or perhaps a Japanese maple.
Having gathered nothing from the death site, they go to the school for witness interviews, with Edwin and Charles disguising themselves as an older man and woman posing as reporters. The school describes them as being great guys. By the end of their interviews, they still have no leads. It's suspicious that no one had a bad thing to say. Everyone has skeletons. Crystal is then approached by the Dragons' mascot, who tells her to talk to twitchy Richie in the yearbook room if she wants to know the truth about Brad and Hunter.
Niko reveals to Jenny that she found her secret admirer and even set up a dinner for them at the shop tonight. Jenny is skeptical, as every eligible bachelorette in town is a crazy cat lady, but Niko simply wants to help, saying that Jenny won't have to be alone and spooky anymore. Niko promises to personally clear Jenny's floors for an entire month if the date isn't amazing.
Edwin, Charles, and Crystal stand outside the yearbook room, where Crystal attempts to read twitchy Richie's mind from a distance, but it's all just porn. So she is forced to confront him directly and unlike the rest of the school, he doesn't look at Brad and Hunter in such a favorable light, referring to them is maggot infested jocks. Richie starts by saying it's odd that their phones were never found. Additionally, they were cruel and treated people terribly, especially girls. But he also heard that they died in a secret suicide pact, adding that they may have been gay lovers. Crystal recalls meeting Brad's girlfriend Maren, and it seems like to her, they were in love. Crystal questions who he thinks killed them, but one thing for certain is that she knows it wasn't Richie, stating that guys who make gay jokes are the biggest cowards. This upsets Richie, who threatens Crystal, and so Charles and Edwin come to her defense, knocking Ritchie on the ground and throwing papers everywhere to scare him. Charles then covers his mouth, and Crystal says that she'll let him talk again if he promises to tell her everything he knows. He gives her the name of Brad's ex Shelby Kahn. No one knows what went down between them, but Shelby left school after; she started stalking Brad and making threats. Then Brad and Hunter suddenly died, only for Shelby to kill herself a month later.
Niko plans Jenny and Maxine's date at the butcher shop; she's incorporated lights and all sorts of decorations, though Jenny fears Maxine will think she's crazy and begins to contemplate backing out, but then Maxine arrives, revealing that like Kenny, she too likes murder docs, as they calm her down.
Edwin, Charles, and Crystal visit the grave of Shelby Eileen Kahn to summon her spirit, which requires a particular method when the death is a result of suicide. Charles hands Edwin the silver bell for announcing guests and requests for Chrystal to leave as a living person cannot be anywhere near a summoning ,or it will not work. As for Charles, victims of suicide roam the world, aimless, and loss. Conversing with one requires subtlety, so he sends Charles away as well.
Edwin knocks on Shelby's grave whilst ringing the silver bell to summon her. Upon her arrival, Edwin explains to Shelby that he's investigating the death of Brad and Hunter, much to her dismay, as she had traveled far away from port Townsend. She would rather walk till her feet bled, then think about those two creeps.
In the distance, Charles and Crystal are confronted by Brad and Hunter, who demand answers about who killed them. It's then that they spot Edwin talking to Shelby, leading them to believe that Shelby killed them. Brad and Hunter accuse her of killing them. Shelby becomes enraged, turning into some kind of monster, floating above the ground, and releasing an ear-piercing screech that sends Brad and Hunter running. Edwin explains that intense emotion can change a ghost, especially a woman who feels particularly wrong by men. Shelby explains that she used to run track and train for the Olympics. At this time, she was dating Brad, but then Brad and Hunter decided to start teasing her about her strict schedule, said she needed to loosen up, so they dosed her with GHB, an illegal drug. She failed her drug test and didn't qualify. Shelby subsequently lost her sponsorship and scholarship, and then Brad dumped her because she wasn't fun anymore. Shelby didn't kill them, but she was glad when they died. However, it didn't change what they did, which is why she killed herself, which she regrets.
Charles is reluctant to believe Shelby's story, reasoning that Brad and Hunter seem like good guys, but Crystal is all too familiar with guys who lure people in with their charm, but are really creeps. Charles reason that many people spoke highly of them whilst there's only one saying bad things, but that one person killed herself, Crystal remarks. Crystal questions why Charles is defending them, to which he replies that not everyone is her demon ex-boyfriend. Crystal now refers to Charles as a sweet guy with a rage problem. He walks around like everything is fine, only to lose his control and beat the Night Nurse. She and Edwin are walking on eggshells around him instead of just questioning what's going on with him. Crystal then gets a phone call from Maren, Brad's girlfriend, who admits that she lied and that she does remember something weird at the party. She thinks she knows who killed Brandon and asks for Crystal to meet her.
Maxine recalls one of her earliest encounters with Jenny, how she was at the fish market about to get in a fight with a man. Maxine Only witnessed it because she was on an early run. She had never seen anyone be so real and strong. And it was at that moment she knew she needed to know Jenny, but she's shy, which is why she sent letters.
Crystal meets with Maren, who reveals that she suspects twitchy Richie of killing them. He hated Brad and accused him of getting him hooked on Adderall. They liked to see him squirm for it because they thought it was fun. Also, Brad sold him Molly with something weird in it. This new information leads credence to Shelby's version of things. Richie was at the party that night, which is super weird because he never came to the Dragon's Den before. She saw him staring at the boys, like he was just waiting to do something. Maren then invite Crystal inside for a drink, though she is clearly nervous. Edwin and Charles use this as a chance to have a look around the house while she's distracted.
In Maren's room, they see all her photos, but none of them of Brad, who was supposedly her lovely boyfriend. They then look out her window and see what appears to be a tree with hands and eyes, which Brad and Hunter described as being the last thing they saw, meaning they were at Maren's house when they died. Behind a cabinet, they find a box with Brad and Hunter's phones inside.
Edwin and Charles rush downstairs just in time to stop Crystal from drinking what is most likely a poison drink and reveal to her that Maren had Brad and Hunter's phones upstairs, meaning she's the killer. When Crystal refuses to drink, Maren becomes enraged. Crystal touches Maren and learns the truth, that Brad sent videos of Maren to Hunter. Upset, she poisoned their drink with nail polish remover, killing them both. With both Brad and Hunter dead, she stole their phones, and with help from Ritchie, disposed of the bodies. Killing them was unintentional, she merely meant to knock them unconscious and take their phones. But they didn't wake up so she called Ritchie for help. But then Richie called her today and told her that Crystal was asking questions. Maren started to spiral and almost killed Crystal.
Maren turns herself into the police, exposing not only herself, but Richie as well. It's their duty to tell Brad and Hunter the truth, but Crystal doesn't want to tell them anything. What they did to Maren was wrong, and she's not upset that the world is short "two toxic dickheads." That said, she and Charles both apologize to each other about previous comments. Crystal notes that losing their lives to "boys who went too far" is a shitty thing the three of them have in common.
Jenny shares with Maxine how her dad left her behind the butcher shop. She never thought cutting would be the thing she got from her dad, she always assumed it would be the alcoholism or raging narcissism. But she admits, that cutting meat can be really cathartic. While holding hands, Maxine asks what is her favorite meat to cut, just before the two of them share a kiss. Both are overwhelmed. Maxine's normal life is dull, but Jenny stands out to her, and is so visceral with her tattoos, bespoke butcher shop, and oversized night shirt. Jenny questions how Maxine knows what she wears to bed. Maxine reveals that she can see in Jenny's window from the alley, claiming it's cute. And sometimes she can see what Jenny is watching and pulls the same thing up on her laptop, and it's like they're watching it together. Jenny is disturbed and asks Maxine to leave. Maxine is confused and asks why Jenny is ruining this. She was simply trying to learn everything she could about Jenny. Maxine insists that she should be flattered and knocks over a glass in frustration. She then grabs a meat clever and lunges at Jenny. She insists that she doesn't want to do this and that she loves Jenny, though she'd love her more if she stopped talking back. Jenny flees into the back, with Maxine following close behind with a butcher knife. She finds Jenny hiding, but just as she's about to attack, she slips, and her head is impaled on a spike just moments before Crystal and Niko enter to see the gruesome aftermath.
Edwin and Charles reveal to Brad and Hunter that it was Maren who killed them, but she wasn't their only victim. They also hurt Shelby and twitchy Richie. They might go a little far, but Hunter insists that they're good guys and that they didn't deserve to be poisoned. However, Charles would argue otherwise. Brad insists that they're better than everyone in the town. It's a tragedy they died. Nevertheless, now that they know who killed them, their unfinished business is finished. A rumbling sound shakes the area. Edwin and Charles hide in Charles' bag as Brad and Hunter are dragged to Hell by a large creature of sorts.
Charles expresses to Edwin that all he feels lately is anger. He fears that he's no better than Brad and Hunter. And like his dad. He doesn't want to be a bad guy. Edwin spent over 70 years in Hell with the worst people. He promises Charles that bad guys do not worry about being bad guys, and that means Charles is a good guy and the best person he knows. Charles embraces Edwin, who suggests that they get his issues sorted.
Crystal, Niko, and Jenny call the police to report Maxine's death. Niko takes responsibility for pushing Jenny into the date, but Jenny blames herself. She even said that people that type letters are psychopaths. Love is the worst, Crystal adds. The deputy then asks Niko and Jenny to clarify a few things for them, leaving Crystal behind, who is pulled back into her mindscape by David, who demands that she let him back in. Crystal refuse to end up like Maren or Shelby. She's going to find out how to get her memories back and crush David, who remind Crystal that he's a demon who always gets what he wants. When Crystal returns to her body, Charles is in front of her. She confides in him that she doesn't know how to stop David.
Edwin meets with Monty at the park. They take a seat on a set of swings, where Edwin tells Monty that it would probably be best if they stop seeing each other, as he's been rather confused as of late. Feelings never easy for him when he was alive, and now he's dead, they seem to bring even more baggage. Edwin is dealing with feelings he's not used to. He thought they were never to be spoken up, but now that he has them, it is hard to hold them back and that terrifies him. Just as he's saying he doesn't want things to be awkward, Monty unexpectedly kisses him. However, Edwin wasn't talking about Monty when he said he had unexpected feelings for someone, which is witnessed by the Cat King and his cat subjects.
