Into the Night is issue 15 of the Sandman comic series, created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Drigenberg. It was originally released February 27, 1990.

Synopsis[]

Explore the vibrant dreams of Rose Walker's peculiar roommates in this mind-bending issue that explains exactly why Rose has been intertwined with the Dream King's newest adventure.

Summary[]

Rose returns to Hal's house, reporting on Jed who's still unconscious in the hospital. She's exhausted after her misadventures: apart from worrying for her brother, Gilbert has also vanished, and Rose's mother told her on the phone that Unity had a stroke; Miranda is now keeping watch at Unity's bedside, hoping for the best. The other tenants try to comfort Rose, and they all go to sleep.

In her dream, Rose's vortex powers are finally starting to manifest: she suddenly feels a strange sense of hyper-reality and is able to see other people's dreams. A diverse gallery of the tenants' dreams is shown, ranging from a stream of letters to an adventure in a fantasy land. Almost unconsciously, Rose begins drawing them together, destroying the walls that separate one dream from another. The tenants are confused and terrified when their dreams begin to mix; thankfully, the appearance of Morpheus snaps them out of it and awakens everyone. When Hal goes upstairs to check on Rose, he finds her physical body missing. She is traveling in the Dreaming with Morpheus, who states that he is long overdue to have a talk with her.

Before leaving to deal with the vortex, Morpheus has sent his raven Matthew to the hospital where Jed is kept. Arriving there, Matthew discovers Fiddler's Green in the form of Gilbert, who is looking after the boy. The rogue dream says he's ready to return to the Dreaming and face Morpheus's judgment, but he is utterly shocked when Matthew mentions that Rose is a vortex. Gilbert reveals that "dealing with the vortex" means killing Rose, because it's the only way to protect the Dreaming from her power.
