Dream a Little Dream of Me is issue 3 of the Sandman comic series. Created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Drigenber. It was originally released January 31, 1989.
Synopsis[]
John Constantine of the Hellblazer franchise, does a cross-over in this issue, and helps Morpheus track a pouch of powerful sand that has found its way into the possession Constantine's old flame. But what horrific metamorphosis has the sand caused the woman?
Summary[]
The issue is narrated by John Constantine. He wakes up from a nightmare and keeps hearing songs related to dreams, as if someone were trying to tell him something. During breakfast he encounters Mad Hettie who warns him that the Sandman is back, but Constantine brushes it off as a children's fairy tale.
Three days later, Dream visits Constantine in his apartment and demands his pouch back. Constantine admits to having bought it at a garage sale in San Francisco, but he never succeeded in opening it and doesn't even remember where he put it, so they start looking for it in Chas Chandler's warehouse. There Constantine finds a photo of Rachel and realizes she must've taken it when they broke up. Together with Dream and Chas they drive to The Brambles, where Dream senses the presence of the pouch.
Inside the house that looks abandoned for at least six months they find an unconscious "creeper" (a burglar who has broken into The Brambles for the thrill of it and is now "being eaten by dreams"), as well as the remains of Rachel's father who turned into a wall of flesh. Constantine himself is nearly dragged into dreamspace but is saved by Morpheus. They also encounter a few rogue nightmares whom Morpheus chastises.
They find Rachel in a corpse-like state - at this point only the sand is keeping her alive. After retrieving the pouch, Dream wants to leave, but Constantine snaps at him, shouting "You can't bloody leave her like this!" Morpheus agrees and grants Rachel a happy dream in which she can die peacefully. Before parting ways, Morpheus heals Constantine of his recurring nightmares as a token of gratitude.
