Ruin is an aberrant nightmare created by Dream who fled to the waking world. His debut is in The Dreaming: Waking Hours #1.
History[]
Ruin was created at some point by Daniel Hall as current Dream to scare the dreamers.
Quest for love[]
He was ordered to haunt the dreams of a mortal boy who was supposed to receive a religious calling but the nightmare was so mesmerized by the boy's beauty that he refused to hurt him in any form, causing to Jophiel, the angel assigned to give the calling, to lose his rank.
After that incident Ruin decided to escape into the waking world as he was determined to find the boy who he had fallen in love with at first sight.
He goes out of his way to avoid scaring dreamers.
Creator G. Willow Wilson describes him as "A nightmare who falls in love with the person whose dreams he was sent to haunt. A nightmare who doesn’t want to be a nightmare and tries to change, who aches for a human connection he might never have.... Ruin isn’t very good at his job. He’s soft, he’s shy, he’s awkward, he’s eager to please. He is as terrified by his own darkness as a dreamer would be. He makes this profound, heartbreaking effort not to frighten anyone," and he embarks on a quest to find the person he fell in love with.
Appearance[]
The true form of Ruin is a terrifying ball of snakes and black goo. However he can assume a human form, in this form he looks like a tall and well-built young man with blue and purple shoulder length hair and blue eyes with black scleras. He usually wears turn out clothes in dark colors like a human rock star.
Personality[]
Ruin is a nightmare who doesn't want to be a nightmare. He tends not to act with malice but is instead, shy, eager to please, and "afraid of his own darkness." He is also a hopeless romantic as he is willing to risk everything —even his own life— to find his one true love.
Relationships[]
Ben[]
A mortal boy who was in a catholic seminary, he and Ruin fell in love with each other at first sight when they met in Ben's dream.
Dream[]
Being disappointed on his creation he threw Ruin into his box for dangerous nightmares. After Ruin escaped and ran to the waking world the Dreamlord tried to trapped him again but eventually he allowed the lovers to stay together.
