History[]

Meeting her great-grandmother[]

Netflix The Sandman 107 The Dolls House 02 Rose Jed

Rose saying goodbye to Jed

Rose sought to hire a private investigator to find her brother, who she last saw in 2015 and had been put into the foster care system, but her mother's estate was out of money. However, Rose would have to deal with that at a later time, as she had a plane to London to catch; she was being flown out by an organization for seven days in exchange for one family history interview. There, Rose learned that she wasn't being interviewed, rather she was meeting her great-grandmother Unity. After being warned by The Fates to be cautious of dreams, houses, and The Corinthian, Rose was gifted a gold annulet by Unity, who also sought to fund her search for Jed.

Rose and Lyta arrived in Cape Kennedy, Florida, where they visited Jed's foster care agent Eleanor Rubio, but she was prohibited by law from giving out Jed's information. However, she did reveal that his foster parents were relatives of their dad's. After returning to the B&B from the foster agency, Rose and Lyta went out to a nightclub with the other house guests to see Hal perform. However, Rose was nearly attacked in a back alley until Gilbert intervened.[1]

Searching for Jed[]

Netflix The Sandman 108 Playing House 04 Dream Rose

Rose asking Dream about Jed

While sleeping, Rose had unintentionally made her way into Dream's throne room, where she asked Dream and Lucienne about her brother, but they too were searching for him. From Dream, Rose learned that she was a Dream Vortex and that once every few thousand years, a mortal was born with a dreaming ability so powerful that it could travel through the dreams of others. While Dream didn't know where her brother was, he offered to help search. When Rose awakened, she resumed her search for Jed, printing out fliers to pass around town, with the other house guests offering to help. While on the beach, she had a brief exchange with Matthew to ensure the dream she had last night was indeed real.

That night, when Rose went to sleep, she began dream walking through the dreams of the other house guests before reconvening with Morpheus. With his help, she traveled to Jed's dream, where she found herself outside of their childhood home. There, in the street, she was reunited with Jed, who had been dreaming with one of Morpheus's nightmares, Gault. Rose needed to know where Jed was at in order to save him. However, all he knew for certain was that they were in Homeland with Barnaby and Clarice Farrell. So when Rose woke up, she went searching for Barnaby and Clarice, getting an exact match and their home address from online. However, by the time she got to their house, she was too late, learning from a police officer investigating Barnaby and Clarice's death on the scene that her brother wasn't there.[2]

Netflix The Sandman 109 Collectors 10 Gilbert Rose

Gilbert and Rose arriving at the hotel

After learning that Lyta was pregnant from a dream, Rose realized that this was her doing and that everything Morpheus said about her being a vortex was true. She then got a call from The Corinthian, who had Jed, and revealed that they were at a hotel in Georgia. Accompanied by Gilbert, Rose set off to reunite with Jed, though she fell asleep along the ride and found herself in the Dreaming with Lyta and Hector. However, Dream tracked them down and revealed that neither Lyta nor Hector could remain in the Dreaming as it was damaging the realm. Not only did he send Hector back to wherever the dead belonged, he warned Lyta that one day he would come for her baby, as it was conceived in the Dreaming. However, Rose warned him to stay away from her and her friends before waking up. Before long, she and Gilbert arrived at the hotel in Georgia. Not long after their arrival, Rose approached the front desk and learned that there was a room already registered in her name and a message from Gilbert, who left and went home. While searching the room, Rose found Jed in the hallway and reunited with her brother, though they were then attacked by Fun Land, who in turn was killed by The Corinthian.[3]

Bringing down the walls[]

Both Rose and Jed were weary of The Corinthian given his origins and the fact that he'd just killed Fun Land, but he assured them that he meant them no harm, in fact, he claimed he was trying to save Rose from Morpheus, who sought to kill her the moment she fell asleep and began to bring the walls down in the Dreaming. Shortly after The Corinthian left the room, Rose fell asleep and began bringing down the walls between the dreams of all the serial killers at the hotel. In the Dreaming, she was confronted by Morpheus, who admitted to seeking to kill her, but only because when a vortex brought down the walls between dreams, she created a single volatile dream that would collapse in upon itself and take the entire waking world along with it. Rather than taking control of the Dreaming, Rose placed the walls back up between everyone's dreams before waking up.

Netflix The Sandman 110 Lost Hearts 05 Unity Lucienne Rose

Rose passing the vortex to Unity

On the road back home, Rose learned that Lyta was in labor and drove to the hospital, where Lyta encouraged Rose to destroy Dream before he could destroy her. However, that night, she once again brought down the walls between dreams and consumed all the house guests in a vortex of sorts, with Dream explaining that the only way to stop it, was to stop her. Hoping to spare her loved ones and the rest of the world, Rose accepted her fate, but Unity and Lucienne intervened, revealing that Unity was meant to be the vortex, but because Morpheus was imprisoned, that fate was handed down to Rose. And so, Unity instructed Rose to reach deep down inside herself and hand over whatever it was that made her the vortex. Rose did just that, and pulled a vibrating heart shaped red crystal from inside her own body and handed it over to Unity, who took her role as vortex and died in Rose's place. After Rose awakened from her sleep, and she and Jed went to the hospital to visit Lyta, who gave birth to a baby boy. And the four of them returned home to Brunswick.[4]

Physical Appearance[]

Rose is a young woman with dyed dreadlocks.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Dream Manipulation: As a dream vortex, Rose can interact with another persons' dreams or make their dreams intersect with the waking world, effectively making a dream become reality. Whenever she sleeps, she can enter parts of the Dreaming, even within Dream's personal castle, and if she prefers, she can change the dream to force other dream entities away. However, being host to the dream vortex does not guarantee full control, and because of the vortex's capricious existence, she involuntarily causes dreams to destabilize every time she sleeps, and she cannot undo the damage it causes. At its greatest, a dream vortex can swallow others' dreams until there is nothing left.
