This article is about Rose Walker from the comic series. You may be looking for Rose Walker from the Netflix adaptation.

Rose Walker is a woman with a special connection to the Dreaming.

History[]

Early Years[]

Rose was born in 1968[1] to Miranda Walker and Burt Paulsen and spent her early years in New Jersey.[note 1] She also has a younger brother, Jed. The two were estranged, as in 1982 her father had taken Jed when he left Miranda and moved to Florida. The Walkers weren't even notified when three years later Burt died in a car crash, and they lost track of Jed.[2] Rose also unknowingly possessed the trait of the "Dream Vortex" through her grandmother, Unity Kinkaid.

Dreams and Houses[]

In 1989 Miranda and Rose traveled to England to meet Unity[1], and a week later Rose returned to America to find her little brother, so he could meet their grandmother, too. She moved into a rooming house occupied by Hal Carter, Barbie and Ken, Zelda and Chantal, and Fiddler's Green, who'd escaped from the Dreaming during the time Morpheus was imprisoned and was going by the alias Gilbert.[2]

With Gilbert's help Rose managed to track down Jed who had been living with an abusive aunt and uncle, but before she could get there, his aunt and uncle were dead, and Jed had been taken by the Corinthian, a psychotic nightmare who had also escaped the Dreaming in Dream's absence. Rose and Gilbert checked into a hotel that, unbeknownst to them, was hosting a serial killer convention in which the Corinthian was the guest of honor.[3] Rose was attacked by one of the killers, but was saved by Morpheus. Meanwhile, Gilbert found Jed in the Corinthian's car, and he was taken to hospital.[4] Rose went home and slept. While sleeping, the vortex aspect of Rose began to wreak havoc on the Dreaming.[5] Morpheus noticed and went to destroy her, but Unity appeared in the dream and sacrificed herself for Rose.[6]

In Search of a Heart[]

After beating the agoraphobia she developed after the horrors she'd endured, Rose took up writing. She was writing a book on 50's television programs and living off her grandmother's inheritance in an apartment in Lyta Hall's building, babysitting Lyta's son, Daniel, when he was taken by Loki and Puck.

Because of the loss of her "heart" to her grandmother during the threat of the vortex, Rose had stopped aging and lost the ability to love. While visiting Zelda she received a message from her dead grandmother; that if she went to see her she would give her back her heart. Rose departed for England and met Paul McGuire, the curator of her grandmother's retirement home, to find out more about her grandmother. While she was in London, she fell in love with Jack Holdaway, a wealthy lawyer. After finding out he had been unfaithful, Rose ended the relationship.

While exploring Paul's home, Rose met her Grandparent, Desire. Desire had some effect on Rose, and she revealed her true feelings on love, and then she burst into tears, finally regaining her heart and learning to feel again.

In The Wake, Rose and Jed attended Dream's funeral. She had found out she was pregnant by Jack Holdaway and confided this to her brother and Lyta Hall who, perhaps understandably after her own experiences, told her to abort the child. In the end, Rose decided to keep the baby.

Physical Appearance[]

The grand-daughter of an Englishwoman and Desire, she has pale skin and blonde hair which she often streaks with various dye colors. She has a slight build, and is not particularly tall. After the events of Lost Hearts she stopped ageing and dyed her hair auburn, a color she kept, though letting her hair grow longer in the next years and adding a blonde streak.

Relationships[]

Burt Paulsen[]

Rose couldn't forgive her father for leaving the family. The only reason she got upset that she hadn't been notified about his death was because she "would have liked the option to refuse to go to his funeral".[2]

Judy[]

Rose called Judy, who died as a victim of Doctor Destiny in a diner in Mayhew,[7] her best friend,[6] and apparently was friends with Judy's girlfriend Donna too.

Jack Holdaway Jr[]

Rose met Jack when she traveled to England for second time, as he was her family's lawyer. They had a brief relationship and as a result he got her pregnant with her daughter Ivy.

Ivy Walker[]

Ivy is Rose's only child.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Dream manipulation: Rose, as a Dream Vortex, acts as a focal point to combine the dreams of nearby mortals together. However, the event of the dreams' converging is incredibly dangerous and destructive for the Dreaming, and Rose herself. Her Dream Vortex status gives Rose the ability to attract stray dreams as she did with the Corinthian and Gilbert.
  • Aging suspension: After awakening her powers as the Dream Vortex, Rose started to age much slower than a human, as she retained the appearance of a teenager by the time she was in her twenties.

Abilities[]

  • Writing:

Notes[]

  1. The information on Rose's home town is rather contradictory. We know that Judy and Donna lived in Mayhew, New Jersey, since they frequented Bette's diner there. In 24 Hours, Judy calls Rose the next morning after their fight with Donna to ask if Rose has seen Donna recently, which implies walking or driving distance between them. In Moving In, Rose confirms that she comes from New Jersey, and in Lost Hearts, she calls Judy her best friend; all of that seems to point towards Mayhew. However, in the same sequence in Lost Hearts Rose thinks of Judy's death as happening "in a small-town diner", which doesn't seem to indicate familiarity with the town - although it could be argued that she just wanted to mentally separate from the event. To further complicate the matter, in Collectors she mentions wanting to return with Jed to Boston to meet their mom. Possible explanations include: Boston being a major international airport via which Miranda could be returning from England; Miranda having lived in Boston before moving to New Jersey or sending Rose to live there. Further clarifications are welcome.
