Rachel was Johanna Constantine's ex-lover who died after coming into contact with Dream's Sand Pouch.

History

Dream's sand pouch

Rachel was slowly dying from using Dream's Sand Pouch, which was left behind in her apartment by Johanna, who left one night and never came back. When Johanna finally returned, she found Rachel malnourished and weak in the bed, barely capable of moving, the sand pouch the only thing keeping her alive. With Morpheus coming to retrieve his pouch, she would soon be dead. Cold and detached, Dream intended to leave, but Johanna refused to simply leave her to die, telling Dream to do something. Taking Johanna's words to heart, Dream sprinkled sand from his bag over Rachel, putting her in a dream, allowing her to die peacefully.
