Paul McGuire was both the personal assistant and lover of Alex Burgess.
History[]
Paul began working as a gardener at the Burgess Estate around 1955. He became the personal assistant to Alex Burgess and also became romantically involved with him around the same time. In 1970, Alex handed over the reins of his father's organization to Paul, a cynic, who didn't believe in magic but saw the order as an efficient method of "parting the credulous from their cash." Under Paul, the order was quite successful in that capacity.
By 1988 Alex was no longer able to walk, and Paul became his caretaker. He was the inadvertent instrument of Dream's escape from his captivity at Fawney Rig, rolling Alex's wheelchair over the binding circle that was keeping Dream imprisoned, and breaking it.[1]
Years later, he had become the owner of the Wych Cross Nursing Home and greeted Rose Walker, who was there after receiving a message from her late grandmother who had been a patient in the facility.[2] The two of them hit it off instantly, and Paul offered her a visit to Fawney Rig.[3]
Personality[]
Paul appears to be a caring person as far as Alex is concerned, though he also displays a cynical side as the current head of the Order of Ancient Mysteries despite being a complete skeptic about magic.
Relationships[]
Paul is quite open about the relationship with Alex, calling him "love" in front of other people and openly admitting to Rose that Alex is the love of his life.
