Monty is Esther's crow familiar who she turns her into a handsome boy and tasks with keeping tabs on the Dead Boy Detectives. It's his passion for astrology that he uses to get close to Edwin.
History[]
Monty is an animal familiar which Esther acquires by being a witch. He can be seen in the background of Esther Finch's house and mocks Charles when he and Edwin are rescuing Becky Aspen. He gets turned into a human due to a spell casted by Esther Finch. She does this so he can gain the trust of the Dead Boy Detectives. He meets Edwin and Niko on a walk, tripping up the stairs, and immediately has a crush on Edwin. He makes up a lie about how he was in a coma, allowing him to see ghosts.
As the series progresses, Esther continually instructs him to aid her in the downfall of the dead boy detectives but he shows hesitation because of his attachment to Edwin and doesn't try anything until The Case of the Creeping Forest.
In The Case of the Creeping Forest, Monty kisses Edwin on the swings after Edwin talks about feelings that Monty had made him realize. He is ultimately rejected when Edwin reveals that the feelings he was talking about weren't for him. In anger and embarrassment, he chooses to help Esther by leading the detectives to the Tall Forest and spreading the ghost eating fungus dust.
Eventually, he figures out what the Fungus actually does and attempts to take only Edwin out of the forest when he is stopped by the Cat king, who reveals his identity as Esther's Familiar and his plan to Edwin. The Cat King mocks him, and the fact that he stole Edwin's first kiss and steals it back by planting a kiss on Monty's lips.
He confronts Esther about how brutal the fungus was, telling her how her plot was foiled because the Cat King told the detectives. Esther responds to this by ripping him apart and turning him back into a crow. He can be seen flying off after this, presumably back to Esther's house where he is next shown.
As a crow again, he is seen yet again in Esther's house. He helps Charles reach his bag by knocking it towards him, allowing him to slay Esther's snake and defeat her.

In his natural state, Monty appears as a crow.
When Esther turned him into a human, he appears as a young boy with shoulder-length brown hair, pale skin, and brown eyes.

- Deception: He is able to lie to the group well enough. He is very good at distracting. He was almost close to getting Edwin out of the forest just with trust, until the Cat King tells Edwin everything.
- Knowledge of Astrology: Monty knows a lot about astrology and is great at reading birth charts.
