Matthew is Dream's trusted and talkative emissary.
History[]
Dream's new raven[]
Matthew was conjured by Lucienne with the instructions to watch over Dream whilst he was in London in search of his sand pouch. Despite being told by Morpheus to return to The Dreaming, Matthew remained by his side, revealing that he only just became a raven as of a couple of hours ago. Prior to, he was a man who died in his sleep. Dream warned Matthew that the waking world wasn't safe, but Matthew was more than aware, which was the exact reason Lucienne sent him, as he lived his entire life in the city. Dream confided in Matthew that his last raven died trying to help him, but Matthew refused to leave. After tracking down Johanna, who realized Dream's pouch was at her ex's house, Matthew and Dream waited outside, where he warned Dream that humans couldn't be trusted, explaining that if he was Johanna, he'd be making a deal with Rachel to keep the sand and give Dream a decoy.[1]
Going to Hell[]
Matthew and Dream teleported to Hell, where Dream suspected his missing helm was located. There, they came face to face with Lucifer and the demon in possession of Dream's helm, Choronzon, who challenged Dream to a battle. Should Dream win, he would receive his helm, but should he lose, he'd have to serve as Choronzon's slave in Hell for eternity. Fortunately, with some words of encouragement from Matthew, who refused to leave Dream behind, even as he insisted, Dream was able to win the challenge and retrieve his helm, which in turn helped him locate the Dreamstone, which they found in a storage container in Mayhew. However, upon realizing that the ruby had been altered, it emitted a blast that knocked by Dream and Matthew unconscious.[2]
Monitoring Rose[]
After learning of the existence of Rose Walker and that fact that she was a dream vortex, Matthew volunteered to watch over her in the waking world whilst Morpheus was monitoring Rose's dreams. Mervyn Pumpkinhead advised Matthew to look for any signs of shock and trauma and to inform Lucienne of his discoveries before reporting to Dream. And Matthew did just that after Rose was nearly attacked in a back alley, outside a bar, while in Florida looking for her brother, who as it turned out, was also missing from the Dreaming.[3]
Matthew continued to watch over Rose. As she passed out flyers of her missing brother, she approached him at the beach, where he assured her of the plan and that he'd be around if she needed him.[4]
Matthew reported to Lucienne that Rose's friend Lyta was pregnant from a dream, meaning Rose was weakening the walls between realms. However, Lucienne had no intentions of relaying the message to Dream herself, as he reminded her that she was merely a librarian. He was determined to deal with the vortex alone, so Lucienne instructed Matthew to report any updates exclusively to Dream, though Matthew encouraged Lucienne to make up with Morpheus.[5]
