Etrigan was a demon in Hell. By the time of the events of The Sandman, he rose through Hell's ranks, which gave him the right to speak in rhyme.
History[]
Etrigan was Merlin's half-brother, and Merlin was the one who first summoned him to the realm of men and bound him to a mortal named Jason Blood.
By the late 19th century, Blood had about half a dozen encounters with another immortal, Hob Gadling, although the demon didn't always remember those.[1]
When Dream visited Hell in search for his helm, Etrigan decided to be his guide and took sadistic pleasure from leading his guest past the cage of Nada, Dream's former lover.[2]
Trivia[]
- Etrigan was an established character in the DC Universe, first appearing in 1972 in Demon #1 by Jack Kirby.
