Career[]
Esme Creed-Miles began her acting career playing young Shirley Temple in the film Mister Lonely (2007), directed by Harmony Korine. She then disappeared from the screen for ten years, until she was cast in Dark River by Clio Barnard. In an interview, she explained that she had attended several auditions for roles in independent films before being chosen to play the lead role in Hanna. The actress said she trained in martial arts for nearly six hours a day over several months to prepare for the fight scenes in the series. She also appreciated how the role allowed her to challenge societal norms, particularly regarding gender and sexuality.
Her performance in the series received positive reviews. The American magazine The Atlantic, for instance, described her as bringing “emotional vulnerability and physical power” to the character, noting that “even more striking is the way she communicates Hanna’s intelligence, her powers of observation, and her constant state of hyper-awareness.”
Esme Creed-Miles is also a musician and a feminist.
She also played the lead role in two films released in 2019, Pond Life and Undercliffe, both produced by Open Palm Films.
In 2024, she appeared in the film The Thicket, directed by Elliott Lester, playing Lula Parker alongside Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis.
