Mistress Erzulie Freda Dahomey is a voodoo deity appearing in Sandman Universe: House of Whispers. Erzulie and her houseboat were wrenched from her Otherworld domain and thrown through a rip in the Dreaming to land beside the House of Mystery and the House of Secrets. Erzulie finds that being removed from her realm has had devastating consequences; pulled away from the source of her power, she starts to starve and she finds herself becoming vulnerable. Her first encounter with residents of the Dreaming, Cain and Abel, is less than helpful.
History[]
The character is based upon the Haitian Rada Loa of love, beauty, jewelry, dancing, luxury, and flowers. She has three husbands - Damballa, Agwe, and Ogoun - and wears three wedding rings. Her symbol is a heart, and her preferred sacrifices include jewelry, perfume, sweets, and liqueurs. She is part of a family of female spirits in Haitian Voodoo. They are commonly associated with love, whether vain, reckless, maternal, or compassionate. Rada loa are traditionally guardians of morals and principles.
Erzulie Freda is also the "sister self" to two other aspects of herself and at least two more, her elder sister Erzulie Danator the protector of women and children and deals revenge to those who wronged them and Erzulie Red-Eye, the Goddess who deals revenge against unfaithful lovers. Erzulie also possesses two other unidentified "Sister Selves", two women, one of whom seems to have a skull for a head. it should be noted that Erzulie Freda is the wife to Damballa, Agwe and Ogoun, and Erzulie's "Sister Selves" consider them their brothers-in-law, showing that they possess a sense of individuality from Erzulie Freda despite her being their dominant aspect.

Erzulie takes on the appearance of an incredibly beautiful black woman with a buxom and curvy build, she has long brown hair tied in dreadlocks, brown eyes with long eyelashes and full lips.
