Urania "Rainie" Blackwell, more known as Element Girl, is a superhero from the DC Comics universe who appeared in The Sandman series in issue #20.
History[]
Urania Blackwell began as a spy for the United States government. During an assignment in Egypt, another agent named Rex Mason was exposed to the Orb of Amun-Ra and gained the ability to transform into any element, and became the superhero Metamorpho. Urania volunteered herself to replicate the experiment and, exposed to Ra's powers, was molded into an elemental with powers identical to Metamorpho's. Now calling herself Element Girl, Blackwell worked together and started to bond with Metamorpho, but matters were complicated with Mason already being in a relationship with Sapphire Stagg. Eventually, Mason severed his ties with Blackwell to salvage his relationship with Sapphire. This abandonment devastated Blackwell, and with her ostracized state and fear of facing the world, her insecurities became overwhelming.
For years, she endured a completely insulated existence, living on a disability pension and occasionally crafted a temporary new face when she went out in public to hide her disfigured appearance. Blackwell attempted suicide many times; however, her powers saved her every time, making it impossible for Blackwell to die.
Eventually, Death of The Endless answered her pleas and offered her some advice. Death stated that she could not personally take Blackwell, since Blackwell's immortality and powers had originated from the sun god Ra. Death revealed that Blackwell was one of many "metamorphae" created by Ra to battle the god Apep, "the serpent that never dies." Death comments on the irony of this, stating that Apep is long dead.
Death then tells Blackwell how to ask Ra to remove her "gift" of immortality. When her prayer is answered, Blackwell finally dies, leaving behind a disintegrating husk of a body and a face wreathed with an expression of pure joy.

Powers and Abilities[]
Element Girl could transform her body into any of the elements naturally found in the human body, and shape them at her will. She could change her hair color using metals, and she could create silicate faces, that unfortunately fell off after a while. She often used the old faces for ashtrays. She said she once tried to transmute her body into flesh, but this experience ended badly, and she vowed never to try it again.
