Edwin Paine was an English schoolboy who attended St. Hilarion's Boarding School, until his death in 1914. He first appeared in Season of Mists, Chapter 4.
History[]
Born January 1, 1901, as a young teen, he attended St. Hilarion's Boarding School. He was abused by bullies who, one evening in 1914, dragged him up to the attics where they dressed up, drew a circle on the floor, and sacrificed him along with frogs and rabbits in an effort to raise devils that never came.
They hid Edwin's body in a trunk, and it was never found, Edwin thought no one looked particularly hard for him since his killers barely covered their tracks. After the release of the dead from Hell, the bullies returned to St. Hilarion's and started abusing the only live boy there. Edwin tried to help the boy, Charles Rowland, but he eventually died of his wounds in the same attic where Edwin had died 76 years earlier.
When Death came to collect Rowland, he refused to leave without Paine. She told the boy she had taken Paine already and could not do so again. Rowland was firm, "I'm not going anywhere. Not without him." Death left the two ghosts behind and Rowland convinced Paine to leave the attics, that he didn't have to stay near his bones, "Do you want to be a ghost in an attic all your life?"
Paine agreed that moving on was part of growing up, "...you don't have to stay anywhere forever."[1]
He later appeared with Rowland in the comic spin-off, Dead Boy Detectives.
Appearance[]
Edwin has blond hair. He wears a blue cap in some of the comics, although in Sandman #25 he threw it on top of the school gates. He has freckles, and he wears knee-length white socks with loafers. He wears a white shirt underneath his black school suit jacket, and wears black shorts.

- Intangibility: Edwin can pass through anything and everything.
- Invisibility: Edwin cannot be visibly perceived by other human beings.
- Flight: As a ghost, Edwin is able to fly.
- Teleportation: Edwin is able to move between the mirrors and ghost roads.
