Earth, also called The Waking World, is both a planet and a realm, being inhabited by humans and sometimes visited by various supernatural creatures. It is a dimension separate from other realms such as Heaven, Hell, or the Dreaming.

Earth in the Netflix series
In 1916, Dream of the Endless was dragged to Earth and imprisoned by Roderick Burgess, which was trying to summon and imprison Death instead. While Dream was held prisoner, The Dreaming was disrupted and millions of people suffered from neverending nightmares, waking comas or insomnia, until Dream managed to break free in 1988.
