"Tales and dreams are shadows of the truth that endure when facts are forgotten dust and ashes." ― Dream
Dream, also known as Dream Lord, The King of Dreams, Morpheus, The Sandman or Oneiros, is the titular protagonist of the Netflix adaptation series The Sandman. He is one of the seven Endless, a familial group of cosmic entities as old as time itself. As his names indicate, he is the sole ruler of the Dream Realm, responsible for the forging and shaping of the dreams and nightmares that are experienced by all mortal beings. His only companions are his librarian Lucienne and his raven emissary Matthew.
He ends up committing suicide to save his kingdom from the Benevolent Ladies and is reincarnated as Daniel Hall to start a new life.
History[]
Origins[]
Dream, son of Father Time and Mother Night, was present when the first living being awoke to life. He and his siblings, the Endless, embody the fundamental ideas and concepts related to existence. They are destined to fulfill their functions until the end of the universe and the disappearance of all life in the cosmos.
Season One[]
Imprisoned by Roderick Burgess[]
Dream imprisoned
In his attempt to apprehend The Corinthian, who had escaped The Dreaming and was wreaking havoc in the waking world, Dream was captured by the sorcerer Roderick Burgess and imprisoned in his cellar, where Dream remained a prisoner for over a century. During that time, he watched as not only his raven Jessamy died, but Roderick Burgess as well. However, after the binding seal to his cage was broken, Dream managed to escape his prison and punish Alex Burgess for his imprisonment with the gift of eternal sleep. Morpheus then returned to The Dreaming, where he learned from Lucienne that in his absence, the realm began to decay and some of his creations fled.[1]
Searching for his tools[]
Dream sacrificing Gregory
Dream returned to his palace with Lucienne in tow to see what little remained of his creation. Too weak from the loss of his tools, the sand pouch, helm, and ruby, all of which were taken by his captors, Dream sought to summon Three-in-One, as they could reveal the location of his missing items. But in order to do so and to even acquire something of value to pay The Fates, he first had to replenish his strength, and did so by absorbing Cain and Abel's gargoyle. Through Gregory's sacrifice, Dream was able to gather offerings from the dreams of others to give to The Fates. From them, Dream learned where the items were last, deciding to go after his pouch first, with its last known owner being a woman named Johanna Constantine in London.[2]
Dream and Matthew
Dream managed to track Johanna down, where she was in the middle of exorcising a demon named Agilieth, who claimed to know the whereabouts of Dream's helm, but before Dream could bargain with him, Johanna sent him back to Hell. Turning his attention back to Johanna, Dream requested she return his sand pouch, though she could not recall its last known location, but she agreed to help him search for it after he tracked her down to her home. There, she realized that she left the pouch at the home of her ex-lover, Rachel. Upon their arrival, Dream and Johanna discovered that Rachel had been using his pouch, which in turn had been slowly killing her. And with Dream recovering the pouch, Rachel would soon be dead. Though, as a kind gesture, Morpheus sprinkled sand from his bag over Rachel, putting her in a dream.[3]
Dream is hope
Dream and Matthew traveled to Hell in search of his helm. At the gate, they were greeted by a demon named Squatterbloat, who guided them to Lucifer's palace. On the road to Lucifer, Dream crossed paths with an old lover named Nada, who Dream sentenced to an eternity in Hell for her betrayal. After convening with Lucifer, Dream used his sand to bring the demon in possession of his helm directly to him. Dream demanded his helm back from the demon Choronzon, but if Dream wanted it back, he'd have to fight for it. However, if he lost, he would have to serve as Choronzon's slave in hell for eternity. Dream chose to represent himself in the battle, whilst Choronzon chose Lucifer, who Dream ultimately defeated in this battle of wit and mind. With his helm, Dream was able to track down his ruby, but he discovered that it had been altered just before it emitted a blast that knocked him unconscious.[4]
Dream regained his power
When Dream awakened from the blast, he discovered that the ruby had been taken, and he tracked the thief to a nearby diner, where he had murdered several employees and customers. Dream demanded John return his ruby, but John instead believed it was his birthright and sought to claim what remained of Dream's power. And so, the two of them went into The Dreaming, where John proceeded to drain what remained of Morpheus' power. However, in taking all of Dream's power, the ruby shattered, and all of Dream's power returned to him. Rather than killing John, Dream decided to spare him, putting John to sleep and returning him to the hospital from which he escaped.[5]
Reconnecting with Death and meeting Hob[]
Dream was tracked down by his sister, Death, with whom he shared his troubles. After regaining his tools and getting revenge on those who imprisoned him, he thought he would feel fulfilled, but he didn't. Feeling down, Death asked Dream to accompany her while she worked. From her, Dream received some much-needed advice and guidance.
Dream and Hob making a deal
Flashback to 1389, where Dream and Death entered a tavern to interact with humanity on their terms. There, they overheard Hob Gadling speak of seeing death and how he never planned to die. Dream questioned why anyone would desire an eternity of human life, to which Death suggested that she grant his wish of eternal life as an experiment. And so, Dream approached Hob and suggested that they meet again in the same tavern in a 100 years. 1489, 100 years later, Dream and Hob met at the tavern as planned, where much to Dream's surprise, Hob saw eternity as a gift. Dream was very much interested in Hob's experience and wished for them to meet every century. And they did just that. However, word of their arrangement spread, and in 1789, they were briefly confronted by Lady Johanna Constantine. 1889 would be their final meeting for a while. During this meeting, Hob suggested Dream sought companionship, a notion to which Dream took great offense, insisting that he needed no companionship, and as proof of that, he left. In 1989, Hob visited the pub and assumed that when Dream did not appear, he was still angry after their last encounter. The actual reason Dream did not come was that Roderick Burgess captured him. Present day, Dream tracked Hob down to a nearby Inn, where they reconvened.[6]
Watching the vortex[]
After confirming to Lucienne that there was a new vortex by the name of Rose Walker, Dream learned that her brother Jed had been disconnected from The Dreaming, which would've required knowledge and power, both of which Gault possessed. Gault was a rogue nightmare, last seen in Jed's dream. To Dream and Lucienne's surprise, they were joined in the Dreaming by Rose.[7]
Dream meeting Rose
While Dream did not know the whereabouts of Rose's brother, he suspected her brother was with one of his missing nightmares and promised to help her find him. That night, as promised, Dream reconvened with Rose in her sleep to help her find Jed and track down Gault. Together, they successfully managed to travel to Jed's dream, where he and Rose embraced as Dream confronted Gault, who was posing as Jed's mother. After ending the dream, Morpheus brought Gault back to The Dreaming, where he reminded Gault that they were all born with responsibilities, before sentencing her to a few thousand years in the darkness for her insubordination. Lucienne, however, felt her punishment was unjust, leading Dream to remind her that he was back in charge and that she could return to the library.[8]
After discovering that there had been some disturbances in The Dreaming, Dream sought out consultation from Lucienne, who suspected that Rose was the cause. She added that Dream's plan to allow the vortex to draw in the missing Arcana was too dangerous. Dream argued otherwise and sought out the origin of the disturbances himself, only to discover that Lucienne was correct and that Rose was bringing down the walls between dreams, thus allowing for Lyta to live in The Dreaming with her dead husband Hector, who Dream sent back to his appointed place before informing Lyta that he would allow her to keep the baby for the time being. Still, it was conceived in The Dreaming, and one day, he would come for it. Morpheus then proceeded to end the dream, though he was followed back to his palace by Rose, who warned him against coming for her or her friends again. Dream then apologized to Lucienne, who informed him that Fiddler's Green had returned and that The Corinthian was after Rose.[9]
Defeating The Corinthian[]
Dream vs The Corinthian
Dream tracked The Corinthian down to a serial killer convention in Georgia, where he expressed how disappointed he was with his creation. The Corinthian refused to go back to the Dreaming without a fight, stabbing Dream in his hand. Much to Dream's surprise, he bled and felt pain, wondering exactly how this was possible. Corinthian had Rose getting stronger every second as Dream got weaker, taking her place at the center of the Dreaming and bringing the walls down between the sleepers' minds, allowing them to dream the same dream, one inspired by The Corinthian. Hoping to stop Rose, Dream confronted her in the Dreaming, where she gained control of her powers and put the walls back up before ending the dream. Awake once more, Dream admitted that Corinthian's failure was his fault before turning him into ash, leaving nothing behind but a fragile, small skull.
Dream threatening Desire
After punishing the other killers at the convention, Dream went searching for Rose in her dream, where he explained that if he didn't kill her, she would destroy the waking world. So, Rose accepted her fate, but Lucienne and Rose's great-grandmother Unity intervened, revealing that according to the book of Unity's life, she was meant to be the vortex, but because Morpheus was imprisoned and locked out of The Dreaming, that fate was handed down to Rose. Rose then reached deep down inside herself and handed to Unity the vibrating heart-shaped red crystal that made her the vortex, resulting in Unity dying in Rose's place. Unity then mentioned how she met a golden-eyed man, with whom she conceived a child with many years ago. In this, Dream realized he had been betrayed by Desire and went to confront his sibling, before returning to The Dreaming to begin his creation of new dreams and nightmares.[10]
Rescuing Calliope[]
Calliope saying goodbye to Dream
Dream received a message from Calliope, who was being held captive by a man named Richard Madoc. While only Richard could free her, Calliope hoped that Morpheus could inspire him to let her go. For her imprisonment, Morpheus insisted that Richard not only let her go, but that he be punished. And so, he waited for Richard to return and demanded that he set Calliope free, though Richard pleaded with Dream, as he needed the Goddess for her inspiration. If it's ideas that Richard sought, Dream offered them in abundance, flooding Richard's mind with so many stories that he could barely think. Overwhelmed, Richard eventually conceded and released Calliope, who thanked Dream for his help and intended to ensure this never happened again. In their brief time together, Calliope noticed that Dream had changed and asked if he still hated her for leaving him and blaming him for what happened to their son, but he did not. He had learned much in recent times, and no matter what, he did not hate her. Calliope asked if she could visit Morpheus in the Dream Realm, so that they could finally talk about their son and grieve properly. One day, perhaps, he responded, but Dream wasn't quite ready yet.[11]
Season Two[]
Family Reunion[]
Dream rebuilds his kingdom until he's summoned by his eldest brother Destiny. Attending a gathering with his other siblings, where Destiny reveals a prophecy he received from the Three that a king will forsake his kingdom and the oldest battle will commence once again. Destiny corroborates this by consulting his book, and Dream leaves after a spat with Desire. Out in the hallway, Dream talks to Death about how his time with Nada, whom he condemned to Hell after she chose her people over him after a meteor destroyed her kingdom. His conversation with Death inspires Dream to venture into Hell and have Nada released from there. Death relays Dream's departure to her siblings, suggesting they continue talking, as that's why they're there. However, Destiny concludes their meeting, as it has already begun.
Dream later informs Lucienne, Matthew, and Mervyn of his intention to venture into Hell and release Nada from there. He gave all responsibility to Lucienne in his absence. Despite Lucienne's desire to admonish Dream, he was adamant about doing this and had planned contingencies in his absence.
Before leaving for Hell, Dream visits Lyta's child and then Hob in a dream of his. However, as he starts to leave for Hell, Abel arrives in his palace, asking if he's seen Cain, who arrives moments later, returning from Hell as a messenger to Lucifer. Cain informs Dream that Lucifer and their army of Demons await him. Against Lucienne's plea, Dream heads to Hell.[12]
Back to Hell[]
Dream visits Hell, where he finds it quiet and barren. Passing through the gates of Hell, where the doors were left unlocked. Dream wonders where everyone was and is met by Lucifer, who, after convincing Dream that they'll not harm Dream so long as he's in Hell, has Dream remove his Helm. Lucifer then confesses that they released all of the souls of the damned and have quit being Hell's overlord after performing the job for over ten billion years. They then ask Dream what they were like before they became a devil incarnate, which Dream states that they were proud, but Lucifer retorts that they were being foolhardy and rebellious, which acted on God's plan. However, Lucifer noted that if they hadn't taken the role, another Angel would have been appointed to it, but now that was all over. Mazikeen then appears and offers to follow Lucifer wherever they go, but they refuse, take Mazikeen's sword, and set them free.
After closing the final gateway to Hell, Lucifer has Dream cut off their wings, and hands Dream Hell, which Dream suspected was their revenge toward them. However, Lucifer doesn't confirm or deny this notion and takes their leave.[13]
New Lord of Hell[]
Returning to his palace, Dream informs Lucienne of the predicament that not only could he not find Nada in Hell, but Lucifer had also abdicated Hell... to him. Dream later spoke to Death and offered Hell to her, but she refused. To make matters worse, Matthew appears to inform the two that they have guests at their front door. To pacify their guests, Dream has Lucienne check them in and has Mervyn set up the main hall to prepare a banquet.
Dream would appear in front of the Gods when Azazel started a scene and calmed it down, while also informing his guests of a banquet later that evening.
Eventually, Cluracan, Nuala, and other Faerie envoys arrive late and extend a message from Queen Titania and King Auberon. They wanted to have Hell nullify the pact made with Lucifer that every seven years, nine Faeries would be sacrificed to Hell. Dream though, gave it no thought, and would consider it.
He'd then guide them to the dining hall, where he left the Faeries in Tamaris' hands, and would watch his guests from a balcony, noting his suspicion of Loki.
Later, Dream prevented Thor from attacking Choronzon any further, citing that they are all his guests and are under his protection there. Two Angels by the name of Remiel and Duma appear, who are not there as plausible candidates of Hell, but as observers.
Dream then speaks to Susano-o-no-Mikoto, whose mindful offers intrigue Dream and then Odin, who offers the location of his missing sibling.
Afterward, Dream talks to Taramis, who, after asking Dream what the Angels eat, states that God trusts him because if he didn't, he'd take the key from him from the start.
Soon after Cain's grotesque magic show, Dream formally announces that he'll make his decision the next day. Walking backstage with Lucienne, she tells Dream that Azazel wishes to speak with him and wouldn't take no for an answer.
Hence, Dream spoke to Azazel in his throne room and offered him Choronzon, but Dream rejects the Demon as a gift, and so Azazel offers Nada instead.[13]
Dream tells Azazel that he'll consider his offer and then banishes him from his throne room after hearing his disappointment with his response. This is later discussed in Dream's study with Lucinne as to why he won't give the key to Azazel.
Later, Dream speaks to Nuala, and the two talk about how Dream once did the impossible by mending the relationship between the Faerie Realm and the Dream Realm. The conversation inspires Dream in his final decision on who to give the key to, and ultimately, it's back to its creator. The response provokes Azazel, who allows Dream to rescue Nada from him, but in doing so, he intends to devour him, but is instead encased in a bottle.
Eventually, Dream meets with Lucifer and relays to the Devil his decision to return the key to its rightful owners. After seeing off his guests, it's revealed that Queen Titania has chosen Nuala to stay in the Dream Realm, which Dream accepts.[14]
Talk with Nada[]
Returning to his realm, Dream speaks to Luccienne and arranges a dinner with Nada, where the two speak their minds. Whereas Dream wants to apologize, Nada wants Dream to know the suffering she had experienced while in Hell. Ultimately, Nada decided to return to the Mortal realm, and before leaving, she told Dream that he had no love for her, only desire, and that she had no love for him. Those words caused the Dream Realm to rain and thunder outside.[14]
Search for Destruction[]
After Delirium visited his realm, she tried to convince him to find their missing brother Destruction with her. Dream would confront Desire about this, citing they inspired Delirium; however, they deny such a thing and suggest they not seek out their missing brother. However, Dream still decides to search for Destruction after Desire mentions the possibility of meeting Nada in the Mortal realm. This proved to be a bad choice as the two people they tried to see, who may have had information about Destruction's whereabouts, had died. One of whom was Ishtar, Destruction's former lover, who died in a fire caused by a gas leak. This causes a rift to form between Dream and Desire after the dance club that Ishtar performed at, and the patrons alongside their chaperone Wanda had died.[15]
Wanda's Funeral & Visiting Delirium[]
Standing by the corpse of Wanda by the now destroyed nightclub, Dream stood silently and later returned to his realm. There, he requested that Lucienne seek out those responsible for the two incidents that had occurred while trying to find Destruction.
A brief flashback to 1675 shows Dream meeting with Destruction, and the two discuss how rapidly humanity is growing, at a rate that could lead to its own destruction.
In the present, Dream attends Wanda's funeral and meets with Wanda's aunt, who gives him the book he requested. They talk, and after they do, Dream leaves the book on Wanda's gravestone and has a brief chat with Death, who convinces him to make amends with Delirium. Passing through the portal way that Death created that led to Delirium's room. There, Dream finds Delirium and makes amends with her and suggests that they speak to Destiny, who visits his realm and recites Ishtar's message to Dream. To find an oracle, and alludes to one related to the family. This realization prompts Dream to recall that it was Orpheus.
In 1700 B.C., Dream attends his son Orpheus' wedding to Eurydice, but tragedy struck when Eurydice was killed. Orpheus asked that Dream allow him an audience with Hades and Persephone to get Eurydice back; however, Dream refuses, and Orpheus severs ties with his father.
Eventually, when Orpheus is nothing more than a head, Orpheus asks that his father kill him, but Dream refuses to do it and leaves him to the priests whom he entrusted to take care of him.
Back in the present, Dream tells Delirium that they need to seek out his son, Orpheus, to find Destruction.[16]
Finding Destruction & killing Orpheus[]
In 1794, Dream entrusted Lady Johanna Constantine with returning his son Orpheus' head to its rightful place. She manages to do this under the condition that Dream allows her to stay with Orpheus for the remainder of her life.
In the present times, Dream visited his son, Orpheus, at his temple alongside Delirium. After learning his location from Orpheus, the two visit their missing brother on his private island with his talking dog, Barnabas. They enjoy dinner with Destruction, who reveals that he absconded from the duties of his Realm. Before setting off to new ventures, Destruction takes his Sword from his Gallery and entrusts Barnabas with Delirium. With that, Destruction transforms himself into cosmic dust and heads into the night sky.
Once that was settled, Dream returned to Orpheus' temple, where, after speaking with his son, he killed him.
Dream then returns to his Realm, informs Lucienne of his deed, and asks to be left alone for the rest of the day, where the following morning, he'll resume his duties. Inside his room, Dream washes his hands of the blood of his son as the Three learn about his misdeed for killing his son.[17]
Last Days[]
Dream visits his brother Destiny's realm for advice from his book, but finds that the pages are blank, prompting Destiny to tell Dream, actions write fate, and the fates will decide his brother's death. After this encounter, Dream visits the Kindly Ones, offering them Wine, Herbs, and the sacred of Hecates. All of which is accepted, but still the Kindly ones remind Dream that it is futile and that his fate is sealed, but at what time it is unknown.
After he meets with the Kindly Ones, Dream meets with Loki and Puck, both of whom were impersonating the Pope and Cardinal Visconti, respectively. Dream calls in his favor with Loki, but later Loki follows Puck's plan to expedite Dream's request, allowing them both to be free.
While Mervyn, Gilbert, Luicienne, Matthew, and Nuala discuss forming an army to protect the Dream Realm from the Kindly Ones, Dream rejects it. He also announces his successor as Daniel Hall, Lyta and Hector's son. Although he's eight months old, he will succeed Dream's power one day.
Eventually, Nuala suggests asking Titania or Odin for their help. Still, Dream refuses to reach out to them, so Nuala asks who wrote the laws, which inspires Dream to speak with his parents, Time and Night. However, neither of them offers Dream the help that he wants.
Soon, Cluracan visits Dream's Realm, requesting that Nuala return to the Fairy Land as Queen Titania requested, and despite Nuala's wishes, he granted it. Before Nuala left, Dream gave her a crystal she could use to summon him if she was ever in trouble. After Nuala leaves with Cluracan, Dream suggests to his subjects that they leave for other Realms for their own safety, but they unanimously decide to stay.[18]
While sitting on his throne looking dejected, Dream finds himself in Despair's Realm, who, although happy to see him, was sorry he had to be there. It's after they chat with each other that Dream comes to learn that Loki and Puck have been working together and have taken Daniel from Lyta.
Discussing how to approach the situation with Lucienne, she suggests seeking help from a mortal agent. Dream decides to enlist the help of Johanna Constantine, whom he compensates with a journal belonging to her ancestor, Lady Johanna. The two visit the Walker home, where Dream sees the sleeping body of Alex and is asked by his lover, Paul, to release him from his sleeping torment, but Dream refuses and is then confronted by Lyta, who demands Daniel back. However, Dream does not have Daniel, and Johanna promises to return him to Lyta.
Outside, Johanna criticises Dream for his behavior and what he did to everyone in that household. Johanna also states that he should re-read her ancestor's diary and that if she wants him to find Daniel, he is to return to his Realm.
Before following Johanna's advice, Dream visits Hob in a graveyard where the two later chat in a bar and talk about mistakes, the wager that gave Hob his eternal life, and Hob's advice on fixing mistakes.
Returning to his realm, Dream releases Alex from his eternal sleep after the two forgive one another, and despite Lucienne's disapproval, Dream reanimates The Corinthian.[19]
Dream puts on the finishing touches on the Corinthian, whom he later pairs up with Johanna to find Daniel Hall.
Later, Dream is proposed some tasks by Lucienne, and despite not having any real interest in doing any of them, he decides on the one that involves settling a dispute.
Eventually, Dream meets with Gilbert and the two discuss how much Dream has changed since being freed from his imprisonment.
Sometime later, Delirium visits Dream in hopes that he would join her in locating Barnabas for her, but he can't, as his priorities are more important. Delirium had hoped Dream would agree and mentioned visiting Destiny before he split in two, and when she left, there were twelve. Hearing this pleased Dream, as it meant there was more than one possibility for this to end. Let's let Delirium take Goldie to search for Barnabas.
Because Queen Titania got hold of Naula's bauble that Dream had gifted her, she uses it to summon Dream, unintentionally endangering the Dream Realm by allowing the Furies' passage into the Realm. [20]
Queen Titania apologizes to Dream for summoning him and unintentionally endangering his realm. Still, after Nuala requests that he return there, he confronts the Furies at his front gate and allows them inside. Thankfully, Dream manages to temporarily send them off after revealing to Lyta that Daniel is still "alive" and intended to kill Lyta in the mortal realm. Still, after talking to Mad Hettie, he reconsiders and, after sending all, but Matthew into the Throne Room for their protection, he confronts the Furies at the edge of his realm where after failing to try to stop the Furies from their wraith, so conceding to his fate, Dream has Matthew summon Death who after arriving the two have a heart-to-heart together and Dream died after touching her hand.
With Dream dead, Daniel becomes the new Dream Lord.[21]
Death & Legacy[]
A funeral is held for Dream, and all those who were close to him attend, as do his siblings, who each gave their eulogy about him. Ultimately, his body is sent off on a boat off the edge of the world, where it explodes into a star.
A flashback featuring Dream meeting with Shakespeare where he accepts his request to enjoy a glass of wine in his domain.
Personality[]
Of all the Endless, Dream is the most reserved and distant of all, he is completely dedicated to his job of observing people's dreams, he is serious and does not understand sarcasm, likewise he is capable of being cruel and vengeful with people who hurt him or who once loved him like Caliope and Nada or even taking out his anger on innocents like Alex Burgess.
However, after being locked up for more than a century, it made him reflect on change, something he had always resisted, and he began to try to be more flexible and forgive others.
Physical Appearance[]
Dream is a thin, tall man with extremely pale skin and silver eyes. He has black hair, which is currently short but has varied greatly in length and style over the centuries.
He normally wears an ankle-length black robe and a black uniform. While incarcerated, he was completely naked.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Dream Personification: As the personification of sleep, dreams, and nightmares. Dream has divine, omnipotent authority and absolute control over dreams and everything linked to them. With these powers, he is almost completely omnipotent.
- Immortality: As a cosmic entity and the personification of dreams. Nightmares and sleep, dreams are eternal. Dreams have existed since the beginning of creation. They cannot get sick, age, or die from weapons.
- Granting of Divinity and Immortality: According to Dream, if Nada had chosen him, he would have made her an immortal goddess.
- Reincarnation: When an Infinite such as Dream dies or disappears, a new entity immediately takes its place, absorbing all of its memory, essence (his soul), and powers.
- Magic: Dream can use magic like the rest of his siblings; all of his spells and enchantments are based on dreams.
- Oneiromancy: Dream can give people pleasant dreams and even send messages and visions through them.
- Nightmare Inducement: Dreams can induce fearsome nightmares in people who greatly offend him.
- Dream Tracking: Dream has the ability to track and locate people through their dreams.
- Curses: Dream can cast and create powerful curses through magic. He can curse someone who has troubled him, suffering from nightmares for eternity with ease, and induce guilt and madness.
- Telekinesis: Dream has the ability to move an object with the power of his mind, shown when he was able to unlock and open a door without physically touching it.

Weaknesses[]
- Magic: Despite being an endless, is still susceptible to the effects of magic as it can be summoned and imprisoned through specific spells and rituals.
- Death: Although Dream is one of the Endless, he can die—but only if he chooses to. Death does not come for him as it would for an ordinary being, but she can guide him to the end if he accepts that fate. In the series, Morpheus ultimately chooses to embrace his own death in order to save his realm and its subjects.
- Ancient Rules: Despite his great powers, Dream, like the rest of the Endless, was bound to a complex set of rules and customs.
- Harm will befall anyone who has hurt their family. Dream assisting with his son Orpheus's suicide, for example, ultimately resulted in his death. This rule is also one of the major factors that kept Dream from hurting Desire.
- Do not fall in love with mortals or the mortal's downfall is assured. The most renowned violation of this rule is that of Dream (known as Kai'ckul) and Nada, which was soon followed by the destruction of Nada's city.
- The Endless cannot take a mortal life unless they become a active threat to themselves and their realms.
- Respect roles and domains. Each Endless embodies a specific concept and must stick to their own domain. Should Dream leave and abandon his role, the aspect of existence supervised by him becomes more random and chaotic, disrupting the cosmic order.
