Charles Rowland was an English schoolboy who attended St. Hilarion's School for Boys, until his death in 1990. He first appeared in Season of Mists, Chapter 4.
History[]
Charles was born in 1977, to Mary and Paul Rowland.
In 1990, during the school holidays, Charles was left at St. Hilarion's, a boarding school. His father was in Kuwait, and Charles had always spent his holidays with him up to then. Charles knew of no other relative to whom he might be sent. He was left alone with the ancient Miss Gribble and the equally elderly Headmaster. Except for meals, he spent most of his time in the library.
After Lucifer Morningstar cleared out Hell, many of the dead returned to St. Hilarion's, including, among many others, the Headmaster's domineering sadomasochistic mother, Headmaster Parkinson, who served 1901-1916, and the violent and abusive school bullies from years past: Cheeseman, Barrow, and Skinner.
Parkinson took over as headmaster, and sent the boys, including the only living boy, to bathe in the icy school pond, and then, since the dead do not eat, forgot to feed them. When Charles was caught out in the kitchen by the bully trio, they burned him on the stove and skewered him with carving forks.
Charles was rescued by the ghost of Edwin Paine (1901-1914) who hid him in the attics. Charles' wounds festered, and he refused Paine's offer to move him to the sanatorium. He descended into delirium, and after six days, death.
When Death came to take Charles, he refused to go without Paine. She was too busy to argue with him and left him with a promise to pick him up when things were less crazy. Charles and Edwin left St. Hilarion's together to 'see what life's got to offer...'[1]
He reappeared in the spinoff comic series, Dead Boy Detectives.

- Intangibility: Charles can pass through anything and everything.
- Invisibility: Charles cannot be visibly perceived by other human beings.
- Flight: As a ghost, Charles is able to fly.
- Teleportation: Charles is able to move between the mirrors and ghost roads.
