Synopsis[]
Confined to his realm, Morpheus conjures up a new nightmare to do his bidding. The God of Deception deals roughly with an intrusive thorn in his side.
Plot[]
The Corinthian has his signature sunglasses put on by Dream, who he thanks and cracks his jaw as Lucienne and Matthew watch. Dream then tells Corinthian who he is and confirms that he is the second, as the first was a disappointment. Corinthian then recognizes both Lucienne and Matthew, which Dream states is because he has a fragment of the old one in his essence.
Dream intended to make Corinthian team up with Johanna, though she was flatly against it, as the Corinthian's predecessor was an eyeball-eating serial killer. The facts, of course, made Corinthian perplexed, but Dream assured Johanna that this Corinthian is different. He also entrusts Johanna with an Eaglestone, one of twelve that contain his power, and has the power to uncreate the Corinthian should he betray her. However, Johanna is still not satisfied with working with the Corinthian and quits the job by waking herself up. But when she does, she finds that the Corinthian is close beside her. He tells her that he cannot disobey Dream's order to find Daniel, but entrusts her with the Eaglestone that Dream entrusted her with.
Meanwhile, Loki continues his meeting with Lyta, who despairs over the loss of her child and leaves after Lyta requests it. Lyta then excuses both Mrs. Shore, who was suspicious of Loki's tale that Daniel died in a campfire, and Rose. With both ladies gone, Lyta sits and mourns the loss of Daniel as Mad Hettie stands close by.
In the study area, Dream tried to take a book from a shelf but knocked it down instead. Wanting something to do to remedy his situation, which has him bound to his Realm, Lucienne suggests a few things that can be done and notes that it's good that he's home. Contrarily, Dream claims he's not safe there and that the path he's on leads to his death. Still, Lucienne suggests that he think like everyone else in his realm thinks, that is, to make the best of what time you have, and proposes that he go through some paperwork, but Dream chooses to settle a dispute instead.
Within the faerie castle, Nuala tries to change her hairstyle and is displeased with it. She visits her brother Cluracan's room, where she finds it a dirty mess with several men sleeping after a night of debauchery. Cluracan appears and refuses to remove the glamour he placed on her. When Nuala asks if Menton will be present at the Queen's tea time, Cluracan makes no promises but asks why. Nuala refuses to say why, and after Cluracan asks about her bauble, she tells him about the power that Dream entrusted to her.
Back in the Mortal Realm, Mrs. Shore confronts Loki over guilt about how he went missing under her watch, so Loki, holding her at gunpoint, suggests they speak elsewhere. Where Loki takes Mrs. Shore is a place where, after they speak together, Loki immolates her and proclaims he'll emancipate himself of all responsibility.
In Destiny's Realm, Delirium talks to Destiny about her dog Barnabas, who has gone missing. Delirium hoped that Destiny could send her on a quest to find him, which Destiny stated would lead her to him, but also to other things. Happy to hear that, Delirium asks Destiny if she should take Dream along, but Destiny responds in a perplexing way as two of him speak in stereo, but with different words of advice.
Visiting Gilbert in his domain, Dream hears from him that Lucienne told him out of concern about Daniel's fate. Gilbert then segues to about how much Dream has changed since being released from his confinement and how it has affected him and others.
From Johanna's side, she catches the Corinthian affectionately petting a beagle, and the two then head to an alleyway where Corinthian stops Johanna from performing Odin's summoning ritual. So, Johanna tries to track Loki instead, and as the two run off to find Loki, Odin appears close behind them.
Mad Hettie approaches Lyta as an envoy of The Three and agrees to take her to them.
From his hotel room, Loki pulls the burned corpse of Daniel out of the fireplace as Puck awakens after being doused with faerie dust. Removing the charred remains from Daniel reveals that he was still alive and has become a Dream Lord, one more powerful than Dream, and no longer wanting any part of this, Puck leaves Loki.
Elsewhere, Corinthian and Johanna find the dead body of Mrs. Shore, whom Corinthian gouges and devours her eyes to discover who killed her and where they were at. This leads them to the hotel where Loki was, and they go to stake out different parts of the place to find where Loki is.
At Mad Hettie's place, she uses a stick of lipstick to draw a circle of protection to protect Lyta from anyone who wanted to hurt her.
At the hotel bar, Johanna meets with Puck, who engages in a conversation with him, and Corinthian joins him. Puck plays along until he calls out Corinthian for who he really is, and after this chat with them, Puck discloses what room Loki was in.
Switching over to Mad Hettie's room, she continues the ritual for Lyta to meet with the Three.
Back in his realm, Delirium meets with Dream, hoping he will join her in finding Barnabas; however, Dream notes that his responsibilities take precedence over Delirium's request. Delirium didn't like that and had hoped they could go on another adventure together, and mentions that when she spoke to Destiny, there were two of them, and when she left, there were twelve. The information pleases Dream as it means there are multiple possibilities for the outcome, and Delirium has thereby given him hope. Therefore, Dream entrusts Delirium with Goldie and assures that he will tell Cain and Abel of his absence. Although unhappy and disappointed with Dream's choice, Delirium accepts it and leaves with Goldie to find Barnabus.
Mad Hettie finishes her ritual and sends Lyta to the Realm, where the Three were.
From Johanna and Corinthian's side, they enter Loki's room, but instead find Dream there. Johanna says that it is not a Dream, but the shapeshifter Loki. As Johanna checks on Daniel, Corinthian restrains Loki and confirms that what Johanna said was true. Odin and Thor then appear, and Thor takes away Loki. Odin stays behind and says there is no grudge against him, wishing him well as he goes in peace.
Lyta meets with the Furies, or the Three, who promise to lead Lyta to meet Dream and lead him to his death.
With Daniel safe and sound, Corinthian wanted to take Daniel to the Dream Realm, but Johanna wanted to return him to Lyta, which Corinthian agreed to do, even if it meant going against Dream's wishes. Impressed by the Corinthian's choice, Johanna decided to leave the Corinthian so he could return Daniel to the Dream World, despite the Corinthian wanting to see Johanna again. Johanna was against it.
From the Faerie Realm, Nuala confronts Cluracan about abandoning her with Menton and learns that Puck, who has returned from his three-hundred-year absence. Cluracan also reveals that Queen Titania is now in possession of Nuala's Bauble after learning she got it as a boon from Dream.
Confronting Queen Titania about the bauble, Nuala reluctantly gifts it to her, who, after learning about Puck's return, who disclosed that the Three are after Dream, summons Dream. Upset by Nuala's disservice to her, Nuala warns him that the Three are after him, and although he would be safe in Dreaming, it's already too late.
In his Realm, Destiny reads from his book as his copies start to disappear, leading to a single Destiny.
Back in the Dream Realm, Lyta, along with the Furies, confronts Gilbert and kills him.
