Chapter 19: Fuel for the Fire is the eighth episode of the second season of the Netflix original dark fantasy series, The Sandman.

Synopsis[]

Morpheus recruits a mortal agent for a dangerous mission in the waking world. A change of heart puts a pair of tricksters on a collision course.

Plot[]

Nuala and Cluracan soon reach the borderway from the Mortal Realm and the Faerie Realm, and there Nuala announces her hope to convince Queen Titania to allow her troops to protect the Dream Realm. However, Cluracan states that she wouldn't see her without her glamour on, but Nuala refuses to do so, hence Cluracan puts his own on her, much to her disapproval.

Entering the Faerie Realm, they're greeted by Titania, who is accompanied by two subjects. Titania would later talk and walk with Nuala, and Titania would take an interest in the bauble gift that Dream gave her, as well as ask Nuala if Dream ever spoke of her, to which Nuala said no.

Sitting morosely on his throne, he is transported to his sister Despair's Realm. Although Despair was happy to see him, she corrects herself, stating she's sorry he's there and for Orpheus' death. Despair then informs Dream that she used to spend time with Orpheus and that he'd sing for her in exchange for information on Dream, who confesses that he wasn't a good brother to her. He then states that his successor is Daniel Hall. This alerts Despair, who looks into one of her mirrors and sees Lyta through it as Rose files a missing person report for him. Dream then watches the scene play out as Loki and Puck arrive at the house, impersonating detectives. When they discover a pile of sand on the floor, Dream tells Despair that he must leave.

Lucienne checks Daniel's dream log and conveys her findings to Dream, which Dream suspects that Daniel had been sedated as a way to prevent Daniel from being tracked by him. Lucienne then relays the information from her research on the Kindly Ones, that The Endless are safe from all harm or harassment as long as they remain in their own Realm, which it's suspected that Puck and Loki already know this. However, Dream refuses to be a prisoner in his own Realm and allows Daniel to be harmed. Hence, Lucienne suggests sending someone else to the Mortal Realm, or a Mortal agent.

Following Lucienne's advice, Dream chooses Johanna, who offers her the book of her ancestor Lady Johanna Constantine as payment for his request to save Daniel Hall, his successor.

Meanwhile, Lyta has a dream where she encounters the Fate Sisters, whom Lyta wastes her three questions on, but still tells her that the ones who took her son were not as they seem, and they will help her.

Elsewhere, Puck plays and dotes on Daniel, while Loki scorns Daniel, stemming from his hatred of children. Loki then discusses his six children to Puck and warns him not to grow too attached to Daniel.

By morning, Johanna finishes reading her ancestor's journal, though she was dissatisfied with its contents. She then proposes they go to where Daniel went missing, and Dream is against it, as Lyta does not want to see him, believing he stole Daniel, which he once said he would do. Still, Johanna convinces Dream to do so.

Eventually, the two reach the Walker Household, and Mrs. Shore answers the door, allowing them entry into the place, and immediately, Dream heads to Alex Burgess' room. Paul appears and asks that Dream awaken Alex, but Dream refuses to do so, citing that his punishment is worth it.

After Dream leaves the room, Lyta confronts Dream, demanding to know where Daniel was. Dream denies taking Daniel, knowing where he was, or revealing who took him. Johanna intervenes and says that they'll find Daniel, but when Lyta asks if they'll return him, Dream states that he's not safe with her. However, Johanna assures her that they will. Before they leave, Lyta warns that if Dream doesn't return Daniel, she will kill him.

Outside, Johanna talks to Dream about how everything that happened in the house was his fault and that he's on a suicide mission based on his own moral conflicts. Johanna suggests that Dream read Lady Johanna's journal again and entrust her with finding Daniel, but also return to his own Realm.

Back in Puck and Loki's hotel room, Puck steals Daniel, telling Loki that he's not a pawn, but a baby.

Dream visits Hob in a graveyard, where he tells him that it will be the final time he will meet with him. On the other hand, Hob is skeptical about that, as it has been said to him before, and suggests they go to a bar and enjoy a drink. There, they have a heart-to-heart about mistakes, the wager that Dream had with Death, and Hob's advice to try and fix the mistakes he's made in his life.

Searching through his chest of objects, one of which included Azazel in a bottle. Although what Dream takes out of it is the container that held Alex inside, and in his work area, Dream speaks to a young Alex who apologizes to Dream for not helping him in his time of need. Dream also apologizes and releases him from his container, prompting Alex to ask if what was happening was real or not. Dream tells him it is, and then allows him to awaken in the real world, where Paul and he embrace.

Holding Daniel in his arms, intending to return him to his mother, Dream confronts him and demands that Dream give him Daniel; however, Puck adds the condition that Dream release him from his favor. As it turns out, Loki impersonated Dream and demanded that Puck and he go elsewhere.

Back to Dream, Lucienne meets with Dream, who tells her that he has yet to find Daniel and that Johanna will search for him in his place. He also requests something that Lucienne is hesitant to do, but Dream insists that she do it.

Meanwhile, Loki talks to Puck until he uses his Faerie dust to knock him out and put Daniel into the fireplace, where he immolates the baby.

Sometime later, Loki, as a detective, meets with Lyta, accompanied by Mrs. Shore and Rose, to inform her of the death of Lyta's son.

Returning to Dream's side, Lucienne and Matthew watched as Dream reanimates, The Corinthian, who, after returning to life, awaits his Lord's command.
