Azazel is a minor antagonist in the first season and a major antagonist in the second season of The Sandman.

He is a demon and an ally of Lucifer.

History[]

Azazel requested an audience with Lucifer. He came at the bidding of the assembled Lords of Hell for their shared goal to defeat Dream of the Endless. They wished to invade the Dreaming, but only at Lucifer's behest. From there, they intended also to take over the waking world and even the Silver City. Since they couldn't leave Hell, they sought to expand its borders until Hell was all there was. With the generals demanding action, Lucifer assured they would act.[1]

Season 2[]

Azazel attempts to claim rulership of Hell after Lucifer abandons it. He joins other claimants like Merkin and Choronzon and kidnaps Nada, Morpheus's former lover, offering her return in exchange for the key to Hell. Dream declines, invades Azazel's domain, defeats him, and imprisons him in a tiny bottle within the Dreaming.

Azazel lacks a corporeal form. He more so appears as a rift with multiple sets of glowing blue eyes and sharp teeth.

      • Flight: With their wings, they can soar through the sky, earth, and other realms, moving at incredible speeds.
