Inheriting his father's burden[]

1916, Alex greeted John Hathaway at the door, who was seeking to meet with Alex's father, the Magus. Alex wondered if John had come to join the Order of Ancient Mysteries, but before he could reply, they were joined by Roderick, who surmised that John had reconsidered his offer to summon Death to resurrect their loved ones. That night, they gathered in the cellar around a gold pentagram to trap Death, but they unintentionally summoned Dream instead. With his prisoner unconscious and trapped, Roderick called Alex over to grab Dream's pouch full of sand and his ruby.

Ten years later, Dream remained imprisoned in their cellar as his ruby, sand, and helm brought Roderick and his followers youth and prosperity. One night, during a party, Alex made the acquaintance of Ethel Cripps, who would ultimately become his father's mistress. After the party, Alex went into the cellar, where he apologized to Dream on behalf of his father and asked if Dream could in fact bring his brother back. Should he comply, Alex claimed he would let Dream out. Unaware that his father stood in the doorway, Roderick dragged Alex upstairs and warned him against speaking to Dream ever again. He then noticed Jessamy outside the window and grabbed a shotgun, instructing Alex to kill the bird and prove his loyalty. And Alex did just that, though he nearly shattered Dream's prison in the process.

After learning that Ethel fled the estate with Dream's tools, the grimoire, and $200,000 in cash, Alex followed his father into the cellar, where he offered to free Dream to go after Ethel, but Morpheus refused to even acknowledge him. Alex attempted to calm his father, but Roderick then turned his frustrations on his son, who not only dodged his father's attack, but shoved him back so forcefully that he hit his head on the sphere and died. Alex later returned with Paul, also willing to release Dream, but only if he promised not to harm them. However, Dream remained unresponsive. Many years later, a now elderly Alex visited Dream in the cellar for the final time, explaining that all he ever wanted was to be freed of Dream, who still, after a hundred years trapped in the sphere, had refused to speak a single word. And so, Alex went to bed that night only to discover that Dream had been freed. Alex attempted to apologize, claiming he didn't know the damage he and his father had inflicted on the world. For this, Alex's punishment was a gift — the gift of eternal sleep.[1]
